| I
studied painting at Camberwell School of Art ('74 to '78
First Class Hons Degree) and the Slade School of Fine Art
('78 to '80 Postgraduate H.D.F.A.) and won a Boise Scholarship
in 1980 to travel in America. In
1993 I won the Guinness Award for the best first time exhibitor
at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. I was visiting lecturer
at Camberwell School of Art 1982 to 1992, and at Falmouth
School of Art 1992 to 1999.
While
I lived in London my work was abstract, based on urban landscape,
but when I moved to the West Country in 1989 I became more
interested in developing paintings which are based on observation.
For many years I concentrated on still life and interiors
in watercolour, but more recently my focus has shifted outwards
towards the environment again, searching out particular
places and journeys for inspiration, and working with a
variety of media and approaches. Etching is also an important
part of my work, using both still life and architectural
subject matter.
